PESHAWAR: A powerful suicide blast struck Darul Uloom Haqqania madrassah in Nowshera district on Friday, killing at least six people, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) leader Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani, and injuring 15 others.

The attack took place at around 2 PM during Friday prayers, tearing through the main prayer hall where worshippers had gathered. Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hamd, confirmed that Maulana Hamidul Haq was the primary target.

“It was a suicide attack. Three policemen are among the injured,” said police official Hameed, adding that security agencies are working to identify the attacker and their motives.

Emergency measures were immediately enforced at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, where the injured were rushed for treatment. Hospital officials confirmed that medical staff had been placed on high alert to handle the situation.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, the incident has drawn strong condemnation from political and religious leaders across the country.

Security forces have cordoned off the area, and an investigation is underway to determine how the suicide bomber managed to breach security. Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and enhance security to prevent further such attacks.

The assassination of Maulana Hamidul Haq, a key figure in JUI-S, is expected to have significant political and religious repercussions, with concerns over escalating violence in the region.
