PESHAWAR: Fifty-four talented Pakistani undergraduate students are gearing up to embark on an academic journey to the United States as part of the prestigious Global Undergraduate Exchange (Global UGRAD) Program, said Usefp on Wednesday.

USEFP spokesperson Rubab said that the initiative, funded by the US government and administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), offers students the chance to experience one semester of non-degree study at a US university or college during the 2024-25 academic year.

To prepare the students for their transformative experience, USEFP conducted a two-day pre-departure orientation in Islamabad. The event featured sessions on academic expectations, navigating cultural differences and engaging in community service, equipping students with essential tools for their time abroad.

Lisa Swenarski, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy, addressed the group, emphasizing the US government’s commitment to fostering mutual understanding.

“I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity in and out of the classroom during your time in the United States. Enjoy the freedom of intellectual inquiry and respectful debate that are the hallmarks of American campuses and society,” she said.

The cohort, representing diverse regions and academic disciplines, includes 59% women, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. The program promotes cross-cultural understanding and leadership skills, allowing participants to collaborate with peers from varied backgrounds while immersing themselves in academic and cultural settings.

Rita Akhtar, Executive Director of USEFP, highlighted the program’s dual benefits.
“This semester exchange gives American students a chance to meet and learn from Pakistani students and it allow Pakistani students to experience US education and learn about volunteerism through community service projects.”She said.

Since its inception, the Global UGRAD Program has impacted over 2,600 Pakistani students, many of whom have contributed significantly to Pakistan’s public and private sectors and community development.

Established in 1950, USEFP is a bi-national commission dedicated to strengthening ties between the people of Pakistan and the United States through educational and cultural exchanges.
