PESHAWAR: UNICEF has expressed deep sorrow following an explosion in Lucky Marwat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which tragically claimed the lives of five children and left over a dozen injured. The incident occurred when children mistakenly brought home an unexploded mortar shell, believing it to be a toy, which later detonated.

The organization extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the critical need to shield children from the dangers posed by explosive remnants. UNICEF underscored that remaining explosive materials from conflicts pose a severe threat to children and communities alike, exacerbated by children’s limited understanding of such risks.

Since January 2025, UNICEF has collaborated with provincial authorities to educate 9,500 children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa schools and communities on recognizing and avoiding explosive materials buried in the ground.

UNICEF called upon the Pakistani government and partner agencies to intensify awareness campaigns aimed at safeguarding children and ensuring the complete clearance of explosive remnants, emphasizing the protection of children’s lives and a secure environment.
Over the years, hundreds of people, particularly children, have lost their lives in landmine and explosive-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially in the tribal districts. Thousands more have been permanently maimed or disabled, underscoring a deepening humanitarian crisis that continues to affect vulnerable communities across the region.
