Journalists Tortured In Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Senior journalist and Dawn News correspondent Adil Waqar was brutally tortured by doctors and health staff at District Headquarters Hospital Dera Ismail Khan locality in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Journalists across the country, especially in district Khyber categorically condemned the brutal torture of their fellow journalists and asked the government to take action against the involved persons.

Journalists also called a meeting which was chaired by senior journalist Ashrafuddin Pirzada and termed impunity against journalists a shameful action.

Ashrafuddin Pirzada said that It may be remembered that journalist Adil Waqar had visited the trauma centre of DHQ Hospital Dera Ismail Khan to compile a report on the mysterious death of a patient.

Eyewitnesses said that when Adil Waqar was taking photographs of the trauma centre, the doctors attacked him all of a sudden and severely injured Adil Waqar.

Sources said that after the attack, the doctors also took away the mobile phone and other belongings from journalist Adil Waqar.

District Press Club members said journalist Adil Waqar had not committed any crime but was busy with his official take to report the mysterious death of the patient.

In a joint statement that attack on journalists was a direct attack on press freedom which was not acceptable for journalists communities.

District Khyber journalists demanded that the provincial government, IG Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other law enforcement agencies take immediate action and ensure journalists’ protection.
