KHAAR: Four police personnel were martyred and two others injured when unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire on a patrol team of the Ababeel Force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district on Wednesday, just minutes before Iftar.
The attack took place in the Naway Kalay area of Tehsil Khar. According to District Police Officer (DPO) Bajaur, Mohammad Khalid, the Ababeel Force team was on routine patrol when assailants lying in ambush targeted them.
“The Ababeel Force conducts daily patrols in various markets to ensure security,” the DPO said. “Six personnel were riding three motorcycles when unknown attackers opened indiscriminate fire at Naway Kalay.”
As a result of the attack, four officers — Yar Zada, Daud, Imran, and Siraj — were martyred on the spot. Two others, Irshad and Aziz, sustained injuries and were shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Following the incident, security forces launched a search operation in Naway Kalay and the surrounding areas to trace and apprehend those responsible. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the district. Funeral prayers for the fallen officers were offered at the Police Lines in Civil Colony, Khar. The ceremony was attended by officials from the district administration, senior police officers, and members of the public from various walks of life.
Emotional scenes were witnessed during the funeral as colleagues, family members, and residents paid their last respects to the slain personnel.
Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
