PESHAWAR: The fourth and final regional consultative jirga on peace and security was held today at the Chief Minister’s House under the leadership of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. The jirga brought together tribal elders from Upper, Central, and Lower Kurram, political party representatives, and members of the provincial and national assemblies.
Prominent attendees included Senator Dr. Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri, Chief Minister’s Advisor Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police, and senior administrative and police officials.
The jirga lauded the Chief Minister’s initiative of convening tribal elders’ jirgas as a vital step towards restoring and maintaining peace in the region. Participants expressed gratitude to the provincial government for the peaceful resolution of Kurram’s issues and for approving a special development package to uplift the area.
The jirga also appreciated the launch of helicopter services during difficult times, which provided vital support to the local population.
Noting the restoration of peace in Kurram, the jirga emphasized the need to sustain this progress. Both Sunni and Shia communities expressed their unity in maintaining regional harmony and pledged full cooperation with government efforts.
The jirga condemned terrorism in all forms and stressed that peace is essential for development. For a lasting solution, it is recommended to establish an empowered committee including federal and provincial government representatives, security agencies, and local elders to conduct negotiations with Afghanistan, recognizing the cross-border nature of Kurram’s peace challenges. The jirga further urged reopening trade routes with Afghanistan to generate employment opportunities for locals.
